The Nether World by George Gissing, first published in 1889, is widely regarded as one of his finest early novels and a compelling example of social realism.
Set among the working classes of nineteenth-century London, the novel explores poverty, money, employment, charity, and the harsh realities of everyday life. At its centre is Michael Snowdon, who returns from Australia a wealthy man but conceals his fortune while considering how it might best be used to help others, particularly through his granddaughter Jane.
Rich in naturalistic detail, Gissing portrays the struggles created by low wages, insecure work, and poor living conditions with remarkable honesty and compassion. The result is a serious and moving study of social inequality and individual hardship.
