The Mercy of Allah (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. An Arabian-Style Fable of Greed, Speculation, and Moral Satire in a Capitalist SocietyBy Hilaire Belloc
Length9h 38m
About this audiobook
The Mercy of Allah is Belloc's sly, glittering exercise in moral satire, cast in the manner of an Oriental apologue and indebted to the cadences of The Arabian Nights. Its mock-exotic surface—rich with proverbial turns, comic reversals, and ceremonious irony—conceals a sharp anatomy of greed, speculation, and worldly cleverness. Belloc uses fable rather than realism to expose the spiritual emptiness of a society governed by profit, chance, and manipulation. Hilaire Belloc, Anglo-French essayist, poet, historian, and controversial public intellectual, wrote from a deeply Catholic and anti-modern standpoint. A close ally of G. K. Chesterton and a leading voice in Distributist thought, he distrusted both industrial capitalism and bureaucratic collectivism. The book's satire reflects his lifelong suspicion of financial power, as well as his belief that economic disorder is inseparable from moral disorder. Readers interested in literary satire, Catholic social criticism, or early twentieth-century critiques of capitalism will find The Mercy of Allah both entertaining and intellectually pointed. It is especially rewarding for those who enjoy fables whose wit sharpens, rather than softens, their moral seriousness.
