About this audiobook
The Men Behind the Legacy gathers complete biographical sketches, speeches, articles, and historical records concerning the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence. Written in the elevated, moralizing prose characteristic of nineteenth-century patriotic biography, it presents public action and private virtue as inseparable. The volume belongs to a documentary tradition that sought to preserve Revolutionary memory through anecdote, civic example, and archival testimony. L. Carroll Judson was an American compiler and biographical writer whose work reflects the early republic's reverence for founding figures and its desire to instruct later generations through exemplary lives. His interest in the signers emerges from a period when national identity was being consolidated through print culture, commemorative history, and popular education. By assembling lives, documents, and public utterances, Judson helped transform political actors into enduring civic models. This book is recommended to readers seeking more than a general account of independence. Students of American history, rhetoric, political culture, and biography will find it a valuable window into both the Revolutionary generation and the nineteenth-century imagination that memorialized it. Its richest value lies in showing how legacy is constructed: through deeds, words, records, and the interpretive labor of historical remembrance.
This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.
