The King's Own Borderers (Vol. 1-3)
A Victorian Scottish Military Romance of Loyalty, Inheritance, and HonourBy James Grant
Length23h 32m
About this audiobook
The King's Own Borderers is an expansive military romance in which regimental loyalty, dynastic conflict, and personal honor intersect against the turbulent background of Britain's border warfare. Across its three volumes, James Grant combines melodramatic plotting with vivid descriptions of marches, skirmishes, camp life, and the hierarchical rituals of the army. The narrative belongs to the nineteenth-century tradition of historical adventure fiction, balancing documentary interest in military customs with the emotional contrasts of romance: courage is tested by betrayal, and private affections are repeatedly subordinated to public duty. Its episodic structure and emphasis on action reflect the popular Victorian appetite for military narratives while also preserving a strong antiquarian interest in the history and identity of the Borderers. James Grant was a prolific Scottish novelist and military writer whose fiction drew upon his sustained fascination with regimental tradition, national history, and the moral theatre of warfare. His experience as a journalist and his familiarity with military subjects enabled him to present soldiers not merely as instruments of battle but as members of intensely loyal social communities. In this work, that interest becomes a vehicle for exploring the relationship between individual character and inherited institutions, a concern characteristic of Grant's historical romances. This edition will appeal to readers of Victorian sensation fiction, Scottish historical romance, and military literature. It is especially rewarding for those interested in how popular nineteenth-century novels transformed regimental history into dramatic entertainment, combining archival atmosphere, patriotic sentiment, and sustained narrative momentum.
