About this audiobook
The Governor of England is a searching historical novel of Cromwellian England, concerned with authority, conscience, and the uneasy aftermath of revolution. Marjorie Bowen treats political power not as abstraction but as a pressure exerted upon households, loyalties, and private scruples. Her prose is richly atmospheric, combining antiquarian exactness with Gothic intensity; in the tradition of the serious historical romance, she dramatizes the seventeenth century as a world where providence, ambition, and violence are inseparably entangled. Marjorie Bowen, the principal pseudonym of Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell Long (1885–1952), was one of the most prolific British historical novelists of the early twentieth century. Her lifelong fascination with disputed succession, religious conflict, and the psychology of rulers informs this work. Writing with both scholarly curiosity and imaginative boldness, she repeatedly returned to moments when public history exposed the moral fragility of individuals. This novel is recommended to readers who value historical fiction that is intellectually alert as well as dramatic. Those interested in the English Civil War, the burdens of governance, or the darker energies of political idealism will find Bowen's vision compelling, incisive, and memorably austere.
