About this audiobook
Regina Maria Roche's The Children of the Abbey: A Tale is a landmark sentimental-Gothic romance of the 1790s, combining mystery, dispossession, threatened virtue, and providential restoration. Centered on Amanda and Oscar Fitzalan, children deprived of rightful inheritance and social security, the novel moves through castles, abbeys, family secrets, and trials of feeling. Its style blends heightened sensibility with moral didacticism, placing it within the same popular literary culture that cherished Ann Radcliffe while also anticipating the domestic melodrama of the nineteenth century. Roche, born in Ireland in 1764, became one of the most widely read novelists of her generation. Her Irish background, her knowledge of precarious female respectability, and the publishing market's appetite for tales of innocence imperiled all inform this work. Though sometimes overshadowed by Radcliffe, Roche helped shape Gothic fiction as a vehicle for exploring class vulnerability, inheritance, exile, and women's limited agency. This novel is recommended to readers interested in Gothic fiction beyond its canonical center, especially those drawn to emotionally rich narratives of virtue under pressure. It offers historical insight, dramatic momentum, and a revealing portrait of popular Romantic-era taste.
