The Case of the Two Pearl Necklaces (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. A Murder MysteryBy Dorothy Fielding
Length6h 51m
About this audiobook
The Case of the Two Pearl Necklaces is a polished example of interwar detective fiction, built around the ambiguities of value, appearance, and social performance suggested by its titular jewels. Its plot turns on the classic Golden Age pleasures of deception, motive, and method, while its prose favors clarity, controlled pacing, and the gradual disclosure of evidence. Set within a milieu of wealth, manners, and concealed tensions, the novel belongs to the clue-centered tradition that made the puzzle mystery a dominant literary form between the wars. Dorothy Fielding wrote within a period when women were central to the development of crime fiction, reshaping the genre through attention to domestic spaces, class codes, and psychological misdirection. Her work reflects the era's fascination with inheritance, reputation, and the fragility of social identity—concerns that naturally lend themselves to a mystery of duplicated or contested pearls. Fielding's narrative intelligence lies in making material objects reveal moral disorder. Readers drawn to elegant, fair-play mysteries will find this novel rewarding. It is especially recommended for admirers of Golden Age detection, jeweled intrigues, and mysteries in which social nuance matters as much as forensic fact.
