About this audiobook
The Book of Urizen is one of William Blake's most formidable prophetic books, an illuminated myth of creation, law, repression, and divided consciousness. Cast in a deliberately archaic, biblical cadence, it rewrites Genesis through Blake's private mythology, presenting Urizen as the cold embodiment of reason, measurement, and restrictive moral order. The original illustrations are not ancillary but integral: image and text form a single visionary argument, placing the work within Romanticism while resisting its conventional categories through symbolic density and radical formal experiment. William Blake (1757–1827), poet, engraver, painter, and religious visionary, produced his illuminated books by a method of relief etching that allowed word and design to arise together from the same plate. His dissenting background, hostility to institutional religion, and suspicion of Enlightenment rationalism shaped The Book of Urizen. Written in the aftermath of revolutionary hopes and fears, the work reflects Blake's lifelong concern with spiritual liberation, imaginative perception, and the dangers of systems that imprison the human soul. This edition is recommended for readers interested in Romantic literature, visionary art, theology, and the history of the book. It rewards slow reading and close looking, offering not a simple narrative but a profound encounter with Blake's symbolic universe.
