About this audiobook
The Amazing Interlude is a wartime romance that transforms the domestic "interlude" of Sara Lee Kennedy, a sheltered Pennsylvania girl, into an encounter with the moral enormity of the First World War. Rinehart sets homely acts—making soup, tending wounded soldiers, sustaining a canteen in Belgium—against espionage, bombardment, and sacrifice, producing a narrative at once sentimental, suspenseful, and patriotic. Written in the context of American engagement with Europe's catastrophe, the novel belongs to the literature of wartime service, where feminine care becomes heroic action. Mary Roberts Rinehart, already celebrated for popular fiction and mystery, brought to this book her gifts for brisk plotting, emotional immediacy, and middle-class social observation. Her experience as a trained nurse and her work as a correspondent near the European front informed her understanding of war's bodily and psychological costs. These experiences help explain the novel's fusion of domestic realism with battlefield urgency. Readers interested in early twentieth-century American fiction, women's wartime agency, or the emotional culture of World War I will find The Amazing Interlude rewarding. It is both an accessible romance and a revealing historical document, attentive to courage, duty, and the painful enlargement of a private life by public crisis.
