Spacehounds of IPC (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. A Classic Space Opera of Interplanetary Adventure, Stranded Survival, and Pulp Science Fiction WonderBy E. E. Smith
Length10h 42m
About this audiobook
Spacehounds of IPC is a vigorous early work of American space opera, first serialized in 1931, combining interplanetary adventure, scientific extrapolation, and romance. Its plot follows engineer Steve Stevens and Nadia Newton after a pirate attack strands them in the solar system's dangerous reaches, where survival depends on technical ingenuity as much as courage. Smith's prose is energetic, direct, and unabashedly inventive, reflecting the pulp-magazine milieu that shaped modern science fiction while anticipating the grander cosmic scale of his later Lensman stories. Edward Elmer Smith, better known as E. E. "Doc" Smith, was trained as a chemist and worked in food engineering, a background that helps explain the book's fascination with machinery, propulsion, weapons, and problem-solving under pressure. As one of the foundational architects of space opera, Smith brought to fiction a practical technologist's confidence and a storyteller's appetite for vast distances, heroic competence, and escalating wonder. Spacehounds of IPC is recommended for readers interested in the origins of science fiction's interplanetary imagination. Though marked by the conventions of its era, it remains a spirited, historically important adventure whose exuberance and technical audacity continue to illuminate the genre's early ambitions.
