About this audiobook

Apollo was the program that answered a presidential promise with a spacecraft. When John F. Kennedy told Congress in May 1961 that Americans would walk on the Moon before the decade's end, the United States had flown one astronaut on a brief hop; eight years later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stood in the Sea of Tranquility. Six missions landed twelve explorers on the lunar surface, the last in December 1972, and the program that dared the Moon survived a fatal pad fire, an in-flight explosion, and the slow erosion of its budget. This book tells the whole story in plain language. The early chapters carry the decisions: the program's origins under Eisenhower, the naming by Abe Silverstein, the mode debate that settled on lunar orbit rendezvous, the growth of the Manned Spacecraft Center and the Cape's Launch Operations Center, and the design of the command, service, and lunar modules and the Saturn rockets that threw them at the sky.
