First published in 1719, Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is one of the foundational works of English fiction and is sometimes described as the first English novel. Whether or not that claim is taken literally, its influence on the development of the modern novel is immense.
Written as the fictional autobiography of its title character, the novel follows an English castaway whose life is transformed by a shipwreck and long isolation on a remote tropical island near the coast of South America.

Yet Robinson Crusoe is far more than a survival story. It explores self-reliance, faith, fear, work, isolation, morality, and the desire to impose order on an unpredictable world. Robinson’s years of solitude become as much a psychological and spiritual trial as a physical one.
The novel also reflects the commercial, colonial, and religious assumptions of early eighteenth-century Britain. Modern readers can therefore approach it both as a gripping adventure and as a revealing literary document of its historical moment.
Its enduring power lies in the simplicity of its central idea: a human being stripped of society and forced to rebuild life from almost nothing. Defoe transforms that premise into one of the most influential adventure narratives ever written.
