About this audiobook
Randolph Mason, The Devil's Advocate brings together The Strange Schemes of Randolph Mason and The Man of Last Resort, tales centered on a brilliant, unsettling lawyer who understands the law less as a moral instrument than as an intricate machine. Post's prose is lucid, analytical, and dramatic, turning statutes, evidentiary gaps, and procedural technicalities into engines of suspense. In the context of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American crime fiction, Mason stands as a dark counterpart to the detective: not the restorer of order, but the exposer of law's alarming vulnerabilities. Melville Davisson Post was himself trained in law, and his fiction bears the mark of professional intimacy with legal reasoning, courtroom practice, and the ethical ambiguities of advocacy. Born in West Virginia in 1869, he wrote during an era fascinated by scientific detection, social reform, and institutional authority. His legal knowledge enabled him to imagine crimes solved—or enabled—through exacting interpretation rather than brute force. This volume is recommended to readers interested in classic crime fiction, legal thrillers, and morally complex protagonists. It rewards those who appreciate ingenious plotting and a provocative inquiry into the difference between legality and justice.
