Tom Tompkins is a highly successful but undervalued detective in the Midlands city of Thornham. He has been frequently passed over for promotion although his success rate in solving crimes is excellent. This is due to the fact that Tompkins is gay. In 1990s England, homosexuality may be legal but homophobia is rife and particularly so in the Thornham police. When a gay man is brutally murdered, the case is handed to Tompkins in the belief that his sexual orientation will somehow give him an advantage. As the investigation proceeds, it soon becomes clear that this is much more than a brutal murder, but bears all the hallmarks of organised crime and serious corruption in high places. Assisted at first only by his loyal sergeant, Wendy Tremlett, as well as receiving the emotional support of his partner, Tompkins knows this case is the most important of his career and he simply has to get a result.
