About this audiobook
Nocturnal Creatures gathers ten foundational studies of bats and their ecology, tracing the transformation of chiropteran scholarship from descriptive natural history to ecological interpretation. Across field observations, taxonomic inquiry, distributional records, and analyses of behavior and habitat, the volume reveals bats as crucial subjects for understanding adaptation, biodiversity, and nocturnal environments. Its varied scientific styles—careful species accounts, regional surveys, and broader ecological arguments—preserve the texture of research conducted close to the animals and landscapes themselves. The contributors, including Carleton J. Phillips, Ronald W. Turner, James Dale Smith, J. Knox Jones, Gary L. Phillips, Olin L. Webb, William B. Jackson, E. Raymond Hall, Walter Woelber Dalquest, and Sydney Anderson, represent a collective tradition of zoological and mammalogical investigation. Their work belongs to a period in which museum-based systematics, field collecting, biogeography, and ecological study increasingly informed one another. Read together, these voices illuminate how evidence about morphology, range, roosting, and behavior shaped a more integrated account of bat life. This volume is recommended for students of ecology, mammalogy, environmental history, and the history of science. It offers an exceptional opportunity to compare methods, regional perspectives, and scientific questions within one carefully framed collection. Readers will find both a valuable educational resource and a sustained dialogue about how nocturnal animals are observed, classified, and understood.
