About this audiobook

New England and the Bavarian Illuminati is a meticulous historical study of the late-eighteenth-century panic that linked American republican unrest, French revolutionary radicalism, and the supposed designs of Adam Weishaupt's secret order. Stauffer reconstructs how European anti-Illuminist writings, especially those of Barruel and Robison, entered New England pulpits and political discourse, shaping Federalist anxieties about infidelity, democracy, and social dissolution. Written in a sober documentary style, the book belongs to the early twentieth-century tradition of archival historical scholarship, yet it also reads as a penetrating account of how conspiracy narratives migrate across cultures. Vernon Stauffer approached the subject as a careful scholar of American religious and political history, attentive to sermons, pamphlets, correspondence, and partisan rhetoric. His interest in the moral imagination of New England helps explain the book's emphasis on ministers such as Jedidiah Morse and Timothy Dwight, whose fears reflected both theological commitments and the pressures of a fragile post-Revolutionary republic. This volume is recommended to readers interested in American intellectual history, religion and politics, conspiracy belief, and the cultural aftermath of the French Revolution. It remains valuable not merely as a study of the Illuminati scare, but as an enduring analysis of how fear can become a historical force.
