Matter and Memory (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. A Classic Inquiry into Perception, Consciousness, Memory, and the Mind-Body ProblemBy Henri Bergson

About this audiobook
In Matter and Memory (1896), Henri Bergson offers one of modern philosophy's most original accounts of perception, embodiment, and recollection. Written in a lucid yet demanding style that combines metaphysical argument with close attention to psychology and neurology, the book challenges both materialist reductionism and idealist abstraction. Bergson distinguishes habit-memory from pure memory, arguing that the body is not a storehouse of images but a center of action within a wider field of images. Situated between nineteenth-century spiritualism, emerging brain science, and early phenomenology, the work redefines the relation between mind and matter. Bergson, a French philosopher and later Nobel laureate in literature, was deeply engaged with the scientific debates of his age, especially theories of aphasia, cerebral localization, and evolutionary adaptation. His broader philosophy of duration—lived time as fluid, creative continuity—shapes this inquiry. Matter and Memory can be read as his attempt to defend the irreducibility of consciousness without denying the importance of the body and the brain. This book is highly recommended to readers interested in philosophy of mind, memory studies, phenomenology, and the history of psychology. Though challenging, it rewards careful reading with a profound account of how consciousness inhabits the world.
