About this audiobook

Few political lives are as closely intertwined with the story of a nation as that of Lee Kuan Yew. Born in colonial Singapore in 1923, he lived through war, Japanese occupation, the decline of British rule, the struggle for self-government, Singapore’s merger with Malaysia, independence in 1965, and more than five decades of national development. His remarkable journey offers readers a window into one of the most consequential chapters of Singapore’s modern history. From his childhood in a Peranakan Chinese family and his outstanding education at Raffles Institution and Cambridge, to his experiences during the Japanese Occupation, Lee’s early life was shaped by a rapidly changing world. His legal career brought him into contact with trade unions, students and political activists, eventually drawing him into the struggle for self-government. In 1954, he helped establish the People's Action Party, beginning a political career that would eventually take him to the highest office in Singapore. But becoming Prime Minister was only the beginning. Singapore's future remained uncertain, and Lee faced political opposition, ideological divisions, communal tensions and the difficult question of merger with Malaya. Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963, only to separate two years later. Independence left Lee with the extraordinary task of leading a small country with limited natural resources, a small domestic market, unemployment and serious security concerns. What followed was an ambitious programme of nation-building. Public housing transformed living conditions, National Service helped build Singapore's defence capabilities, education developed a bilingual system, and industrialisation and foreign investment created new opportunities for economic growth. Infrastructure, institutions, international relations and social policies were developed as part of a broader effort to establish a viable and independent nation. Yet this is not simply a story of achievement. Lee's political career also involved fierce conflicts, opposition struggles and controversial decisions, including Operation Coldstore and debates over political dissent. The book examines these events as important parts of Singapore's history, recognising that some remain contested and have been interpreted differently by different sides. Beyond the politician was a husband, father, writer and lifelong learner. His partnership with Kwa Geok Choo lasted more than six decades, while his later years saw him transition from Prime Minister to Senior Minister and then Minister Mentor before finally leaving the Cabinet in 2011. He died in 2015 at the age of 91. Lee Kuan Yew is more than the biography of Singapore's first Prime Minister. It is the story of a man shaped by a turbulent century, a country transformed under extraordinary circumstances, and the continuing questions surrounding leadership, nation-building, political conflict and historical legacy. Whether you know Singapore intimately or are discovering its history for the first time, this book offers an accessible journey into the life of the man whose political career became inseparable from the making of modern Singapore.
