John Sherman; and, Dhoya
Two Early Prose Experiments in Celtic Revival Fiction, Anglo-Irish Identity, and Mythic Irish RomanceBy W. B. Yeats

About this audiobook
John Sherman; and, Dhoya brings together two early prose works that illuminate W. B. Yeats's developing imaginative world. The title novella follows John Sherman, an Irishman settled uneasily in London, whose divided loyalties dramatize the tensions between metropolitan modernity and the claims of home, language, and national identity. Its conversational, psychologically attentive style anticipates Yeats's later interest in symbolic character and spiritual conflict. Dhoya, by contrast, is a compact mythic narrative rooted in an invented ancient Ireland, where elemental passion and heroic violence transform history into legend. Together, the works occupy a revealing place in the Irish Literary Revival, joining realistic social observation to Celtic romance and folklore. Yeats wrote these pieces during the formative period in which he was turning from conventional Victorian literary models toward an Irish-centered art. His engagement with folklore, nationalism, mysticism, and the recovery of Gaelic tradition shaped both the modern setting of John Sherman and the visionary antiquity of Dhoya. The volume records an early stage in his effort to create a distinctly Irish literature in English, while also reflecting his lifelong preoccupation with exile, belonging, memory, and the power of myth. This volume is especially valuable for readers interested in Yeats's artistic development, Irish cultural nationalism, and the relationship between realism and myth. It offers an accessible entrance into the intellectual atmosphere that produced the Irish Literary Theatre and Yeats's later poetry and drama. Read together, these narratives reveal a major modern writer testing the forms through which private disquiet might become national and legendary meaning.
