About this audiobook
History of Lace is a pioneering Victorian study that treats lace not as a minor decorative craft but as a significant art form, commercial product, and historical document. Mrs. Bury Palliser traces the development of needle and pillow lace across Italy, Flanders, France, Spain, England, and other centres, combining antiquarian research with connoisseurship and practical knowledge of patterns, techniques, and terminology. Its prose is learned yet accessible, characteristic of nineteenth-century cultural history, and it helped establish lace within the broader scholarly conversation on textiles, fashion, and European material culture. Mrs. Bury Palliser, an English writer and authority on decorative arts, brought to the subject both social familiarity with historic dress and a researcher's dedication to archives, inventories, portraits, and surviving specimens. Writing at a time when industrial production threatened older handcraft traditions, she sought to preserve the memory of regional workmanship and to clarify distinctions often blurred by fashion and commerce. This book is recommended to readers interested in textile history, costume studies, women's work, collecting, and the cultural life of objects. Though Victorian in method, it remains invaluable for its breadth, precision, and passionate recognition of lace as an art shaped by labour, luxury, and history.
