About this audiobook

Henry Martyn, Saint and Scholar is a Victorian missionary biography that presents its subject as both exemplary Christian ascetic and formidable Orientalist. George Smith traces Martyn's Cambridge brilliance, evangelical conversion, chaplaincy in India, linguistic labors, and arduous journey toward Persia, where his translation work and theological disputations gave enduring shape to Protestant engagement with Islam. Written in the elevated, documentary style of nineteenth-century religious life-writing, the book combines edifying narrative, travel history, and imperial-era scholarship. George Smith, a Scottish journalist, editor, and historian of missions, was especially equipped to interpret Martyn's career. Known for his biographies of William Carey and other missionary figures, Smith understood the intellectual networks of British evangelicalism, the East India Company world, and the philological ambitions that often accompanied missionary enterprise. His admiration for Martyn is devotional, yet it is also informed by a historian's concern for sources, chronology, and institutional context. Readers interested in missionary history, Anglican evangelicalism, translation studies, or Britain's encounter with South Asia and Persia will find this volume rewarding. Though shaped by assumptions of its age, it remains a vivid account of a remarkable life devoted to learning, faith, and sacrificial service.
