Unlike any other vættir in Scandinavian folklore, the dead came too close to the everyday lives of the living. They interfered in farming, travels, religion, justice, and even love. They loomed close by, interacting at will, always with their own agenda, often to the detriment of those they had once lived among.
From the time of the sagas well into modern times, the dead rose from their graves seeking revenge, forgiveness, or to complete the simplest of tasks to be able to leave their haunting ways behind.
From the vengeful Norse draugr to the repentant yet eternally doomed boundary ghost, a strangely hopeful afterlife developed in a chaotic world where justice and peace ultimately lay in the hands of the living.
