About this audiobook
Further Experiences of an Irish R.M. extends the comic world of the Resident Magistrate stories with a deft mixture of sporting tale, social comedy, anecdotal realism, and Anglo-Irish satire. Set amid the estates, villages, courtrooms, and hunt fields of rural Ireland, the collection captures a society in transition through episodes rich in dialect, irony, and narrative misdirection. Its standout scenes of legal absurdity, equestrian chaos, and domestic intrigue illuminate the precarious codes of class, gender, and local authority. Writing collaboratively as "Somerville and Ross," Edith Œnone Somerville and Violet Martin brought to these stories an insider's familiarity with the Anglo-Irish gentry and a sharp awareness of the cultural tensions shaping late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ireland. Their fiction belongs to the tradition of Irish comic realism while also engaging with questions of colonial administration, oral storytelling, and regional identity. The varied voices of magistrates, servants, tenants, landlords, and horse-dealers create a layered portrait of communal life. This volume is recommended to readers interested in Irish literature, social history, and the art of comic narrative. It offers, within a single collection, a lively range of perspectives and styles, fostering a dialogue between humor and critique, nostalgia and historical change.
