Frankenstein - The 'Uncensored' Original 1818 Edition (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. The 1818 Gothic Science Fiction Classic of Creation, Isolation, and Forbidden KnowledgeBy Mary Shelley
Length9h 30m
About this audiobook
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, presented here in its original 1818 form, is a foundational work of Gothic fiction and philosophical science fiction. Its layered epistolary structure, grave Romantic diction, and shifting moral perspectives create a searching meditation on creation, responsibility, isolation, and the limits of Enlightenment ambition. Less softened than later revisions, the 1818 text preserves the novel's radical intensity, political resonance, and unsettling ambiguity. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein as a remarkably young author amid the intellectual ferment of the Romantic circle, influenced by debates on galvanism, materialism, education, and revolutionary politics. The daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, she inherited a profound concern with human perfectibility, social injustice, and moral accountability. Personal experiences of loss, displacement, and precarious maternity further deepen the novel's haunting treatment of birth, abandonment, and sympathy. This edition is essential for readers who wish to encounter Frankenstein at its most daring and philosophically provocative. Scholars, students, and general readers alike will find in the 1818 text not merely a horror classic, but a subtle, rigorous inquiry into what human beings owe to what they bring into existence.
