Enriched Edition. The Life of William ShakespeareBy William Shakespeare, Sidney Lee
Length16h 58m
About this audiobook
Bringing together the unabridged text of As You Like It with Sidney Lee's classic biographical study, this volume situates Shakespeare's pastoral comedy within the broader imaginative and historical world of its maker. The play's mingling of courtly intrigue, woodland exile, disguise, philosophical wit, lyric song, and romantic reconciliation reveals the range of Elizabethan dramatic art at its most supple. Standout moments such as the "All the world's a stage" meditation and the transformative freedoms of Arden illuminate comedy as both social critique and poetic experiment. The pairing of Shakespeare's drama with Lee's biography reflects a long scholarly tradition devoted to reading literature alongside authorship, theatrical culture, and Renaissance history. Shakespeare emerges not merely as an isolated genius but as a writer shaped by the commercial stage, humanist learning, popular performance, and the shifting social energies of late Tudor England. Lee's contribution, grounded in early modern literary scholarship, offers historical context that deepens the play's concerns with identity, gender, exile, love, and artistic self-fashioning. Recommended for students, teachers, and general readers alike, this edition offers a valuable double encounter: a complete dramatic masterpiece and a formative critical portrait of its author. It invites readers to move between text and context, performance and biography, literary pleasure and historical inquiry, fostering a richer dialogue between Shakespeare's art and the enduring traditions of Shakespearean criticism.
