About this audiobook
William Somerset Maugham: The Greatest Works gathers the fiction of one of the twentieth century's most lucid and unsentimental storytellers, presenting a broad view of his novels, stories, and dramatic sensibility. Maugham's prose is famously polished, economical, and ironic, shaped by realism yet alert to moral ambiguity, social performance, and the hidden costs of desire. Within the literary context of late Victorian inheritance and modernist disruption, his work occupies a distinctive middle ground: formally accessible, psychologically acute, and quietly radical in its scrutiny of convention. Maugham's life strongly informs the texture of these writings. Born in Paris, trained as a physician, and widely traveled through Europe, Asia, and the Pacific, he observed human conduct with the detachment of a clinician and the curiosity of a cosmopolitan exile. His experiences as a doctor, intelligence agent, dramatist, and celebrated novelist gave him rare access to different social worlds, enabling his fiction to expose hypocrisy without surrendering sympathy. This volume is recommended to readers seeking both narrative pleasure and intellectual refinement. It offers an excellent introduction to Maugham's major themes—freedom, compromise, art, sexuality, and self-deception—while rewarding sustained study. For admirers of elegant prose and morally complex storytelling, it is an essential collection.
