About this audiobook

Edward Maitland's *The Story of Anna Kingsford and Edward Maitland and of the New Gospel of Interpretation* is at once memoir, spiritual autobiography, and manifesto for a renewed Christian esotericism. It recounts the intellectual and visionary partnership between Maitland and Anna Kingsford, presenting their interpretations of biblical symbols, mystical experience, and the inner meaning of Christian doctrine. Written in a fervent, testimonial style that combines biography with theological exposition, the book belongs to the late-Victorian revival of occult, mystical, and alternative religious thought. Its central claim is that Christianity possesses an allegorical and initiatory wisdom obscured by literalism, and that this "new gospel" can recover the unity of religion, philosophy, and spiritual experience. Maitland (1824–1897), a writer, spiritual thinker, and former journalist, became Kingsford's collaborator after recognizing the depth of her visionary religious insight. Their shared opposition to materialism, dogmatic orthodoxy, vivisection, and the reduction of religion to institutional authority shaped the work's intellectual urgency. Following Kingsford's death, Maitland sought both to preserve her memory and to articulate the system of interpretation they had developed together. This book will reward readers interested in Victorian religious dissent, Christian mysticism, occult history, women's intellectual and spiritual leadership, and the formation of modern esoteric traditions. It should be approached not merely as biography, but as a passionate document of religious reconstruction—an illuminating, if demanding, record of two thinkers' attempt to recover Christianity's hidden symbolic language.
