After surviving a near-fatal carriage accident, Aiden discovers that by touching the recently deceased he can return them to life for roughly six weeks. He uses this ability to help murder victims reveal the truth about their deaths and bring those responsible to justice.
Across the novel, Aiden investigates several disturbing cases, including a murdered merchant's daughter, an abused chimney sweep, a poisoned soldier and an actress whose apparent suicide hides a darker truth. But every resurrection comes at a terrible cost. Aiden suffers increasingly severe headaches, tremors and nosebleeds, and gradually realises that each life he restores is shortening his own.
