Kaelen Vire is an unremarkable man until a voice — Ashkarion — calls him to leave everything on the strength of an impossible promise: his descendants will become a nation carrying the Ember through the ages. He and his wife Solenne set out into the unknown, their faith tested immediately by famine, exile, and the dangerous court of Ossara, where Kaelen's cowardice nearly costs Solenne everything.
Back on promised ground, rivalry grows between Kaelen and his kinsman Corvan Ashe, splitting their household. Meanwhile, Solenne's inability to bear a child drives her to offer her handmaiden Ashra Ket as a surrogate — a choice that fractures the family and casts Ashra into exile, where she receives an unasked-for promise of her own.
Solenne finally conceives, bearing a son, Tobrin Ka. But the volume closes not in triumph — Ashkarion demands Kaelen surrender the very child the promise was built on, testing whether faith can survive when the Voice explains nothing.
