About this audiobook

The Secret Science Behind Miracles is Max Freedom Long's influential exposition of Huna, the esoteric system he believed underlay the healing practices, psychic phenomena, and "miracles" attributed to Hawaiian kahunas. Written in a clear, investigative, and often didactic prose style, the book blends anecdotal case study, comparative religion, occult psychology, and speculative anthropology. Its literary context belongs to the mid-twentieth-century current of metaphysical inquiry, where Theosophy, New Thought, and popular psychical research sought to reconcile ancient wisdom with modern explanatory frameworks. Long, an American teacher and writer who lived and worked in Hawaii, became fascinated by indigenous spiritual practices and by the possibility that ritual efficacy might rest on hidden psychological laws. His background as an educator shaped the book's systematic tone, while his outsider status and speculative method have made his interpretations both enduringly popular and critically contested among scholars of Hawaiian culture. Readers interested in Western esotericism, alternative spirituality, and the history of occult interpretations of non-Western traditions will find this book absorbing. It is best approached as a significant metaphysical document rather than conventional ethnography.
