Leo Spalding is a thirty-two-year-old banner ad writer whose greatest life achievement is a pun about mattresses. His existence is beige, boring, and blissfully safe—until he finds a miniature, sarcastic unicorn named Glim living under his desk. Glim claims to be a "Reality Checker" from the Cosmic Narrative, and Leo is a supporting character living a lead character's life. Forced into protagonist training, Leo must navigate office politics, disastrous meet-cutes with a graphic novelist named Clara, and a reality-bending crisis at work.
