When the king is drugged and unable to attend his coronation, Rassendyll has to impersonate him to prevent a coup by the king's evil half-brother, Black Michael. During this impersonation, Rassendyll has to deal with attempts on his life, intrigue, and a love triangle involving the king's fiancee. The story culminates in a rescue mission to save the real king, held prisoner in the castle of Zenda.
