The Apex could only be reached by traveling to the exact point on Earth where the sun had been directly overhead when it went dark, then ascending through a dimensional gateway that would open if the correct sequence was followed. Reina's mission was to find the Apex, reach the Celestial Engine, and restart it before the world froze to death.
