Matthew Chaplin is studying theology in Cardiff when he learns his father's death was murder. The outcome of the police investigation causes him to question his call to Christian ministry and to seek a more lucrative career, leading him into dealing with businessmen, farmers, a pop singer and an aristocratic female jockey, while he conducts his own investigation, revealing forces far more sinister than he had imagined putting himself and others in great danger, as he reconsiders his values.
