About this audiobook
The Journalism of Oscar Wilde gathers the essays, reviews, occasional pieces, and editorial interventions through which Wilde helped shape late-Victorian literary and cultural debate. Read together, these writings reveal not a mere apprentice to the plays and fiction, but a critic of extraordinary range: urbane, paradoxical, sensuous, and sharply attentive to art, fashion, politics, theatre, and social manners. Situated within the bustling periodical culture of the 1880s and 1890s, the collection illuminates Wilde's aestheticism as a public practice as much as a literary doctrine. Oscar Wilde, born in Dublin in 1854 and educated at Trinity College and Oxford, entered journalism with the advantages of classical learning, conversational brilliance, and a keen instinct for self-fashioning. His editorship of The Woman's World and his contributions to leading newspapers and magazines reflect his belief that criticism could be creative, democratic, and stylish. The pressures of professional authorship also encouraged Wilde to refine the voice that would later animate his essays, stories, and comedies. This volume is essential for readers seeking the full architecture of Wilde's mind. It is recommended not only to admirers of his wit, but to students of Victorian culture, aesthetic theory, and the modern literary essay.
