About this audiobook
The Irish Guards in the Great War is Kipling's meticulous two-volume regimental history of the Irish Guards from 1914 to 1918, tracing battalion movements, engagements, casualties, and the ordinary disciplines of soldiering on the Western Front. Drawing on war diaries, official records, and soldiers' testimony, its style is compressed, exact, and unsentimental, yet charged with a grave lyricism. It belongs to the postwar literature of remembrance, standing between military chronicle and elegy. Rudyard Kipling, already the celebrated author of imperial poems, tales, and The Jungle Book, wrote this work from both public duty and private grief. His son, John Kipling, served with the Irish Guards and was killed at Loos in 1915. Kipling's later involvement with the Imperial War Graves Commission deepened his commitment to commemorating the dead with dignity, precision, and restraint. This complete edition is recommended to readers of First World War history, military biography, and Kipling's mature prose. It rewards patience with an intimate view of courage under industrial war, and with a memorial art that refuses melodrama while preserving the names, actions, and endurance of a regiment.
