The Harrodsburg Ward, begins in October 1863. Cane is fifteen years old and a cavalry corporal, newly arrived by ambulance wagon at the Shaker village of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky — a portion of its limestone buildings commandeered by the Union Army for use as a military hospital. He is given cot seven in Ward C. From cot seven, he can see the supply shelf. And before November is out, he has understood that the numbers on the shelf do not match the numbers in the steward's ledger.
It is his first investigation — improvised, unofficial, carried out by a boy with a shattered shoulder, a Bible, and a memory that will not let things go. It is also the novel in which he first encounters the verse from Micah that will define his life: do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.
He will spend the rest of his life learning what that costs.
