Third Floor Landing
The third-floor landing always smelled faintly of laundry soap and warm dust.
Mara noticed it because she paused there most evenings, keys in hand, not quite ready to go inside. A small delay. A habit she didn’t question. The light flickered sometimes, a soft hum overhead. She had learned the rhythm of it.
That night, the rhythm changed.
A box sat on the landing. Open. Half-filled with books. A man crouched beside it, turning one over in his hands like he wasn’t sure where it belonged.
He didn’t look up at first. Just brushed his thumb along the spine, slow, careful. There was a crease between his eyebrows, the kind that meant he thought too much about small things.
Mara shifted her weight. Her shoe made a sound against the concrete.
