About this audiobook
The Complete Poetry gathers Robert Louis Stevenson's verse in its remarkable range: the nursery cadences of A Child's Garden of Verses, the reflective lyrics of travel and exile, moral meditations, occasional poems, and the South Seas writings of his final years. Stevenson's poetry combines formal clarity with musical lightness, often disguising philosophical depth beneath apparent simplicity. Situated between Victorian moral verse, Romantic inheritance, and the emergent modern fascination with memory and selfhood, the collection reveals a writer attentive to childhood, illness, adventure, and the imaginative power of place. Stevenson, born in Edinburgh in 1850, lived under the shadow of chronic ill health, a condition that sharpened his awareness of transience and intensified his imaginative life. Though celebrated for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, he was also a lifelong poet whose travels through Europe, America, and the Pacific shaped his sense of displacement, wonder, and cultural encounter. His verse often reflects the tensions between fragility and vitality that marked his biography. This volume is recommended to readers who know Stevenson chiefly as a novelist and wish to encounter the full breadth of his artistry. It offers scholars and general readers alike a lucid, moving record of Victorian imagination, childhood perception, and lyrical craftsmanship.
