About this audiobook
The Collected Stories of 1935–1940 gathers twenty-five previously uncollected pieces from Francis Scott Fitzgerald's final creative period, when his fiction turned from Jazz Age glitter toward austerity, disillusion, and hard-won moral perception. Written for magazines yet marked by unmistakable artistry, these stories explore debt, work, marriage, youth's fading glamour, and the compromises of ambition. Their style is leaner than Fitzgerald's 1920s prose, but still luminous, poised between popular storytelling and modernist psychological nuance. Fitzgerald's own circumstances deeply inform the collection. By the mid-1930s he was struggling with alcoholism, financial pressure, Zelda Fitzgerald's illness, and the decline of his public reputation. His move to Hollywood as a screenwriter sharpened his awareness of performance, illusion, and artistic failure. These late stories often read as oblique self-portraits: comic, wounded, observant, and intensely conscious of talent under strain. This volume is recommended to readers who know Fitzgerald only through The Great Gatsby or Tender Is the Night, as well as to scholars of American modernism. It reveals a less celebrated but essential Fitzgerald: disciplined, commercially embattled, and still capable of piercing emotional truth.
