When strangers known as the beautiful ones arrive in Mara’s town, they predict a coming catastrophe and the mysterious disappearance of certain people. As the sky turns copper and vanishings begin, panic spreads. Mara learns the beautiful ones are survivors of earlier devastation, people who endured suffering without becoming cruel. She must choose between staying with her mother or joining them to help humanity endure the coming global collapse. She leaves, heartbroken, and helps guide survivors through the ruined world. In the end, she reunites with her mother in a safe valley, realizing the beautiful ones are simply humans who choose compassion after everything falls apart.
