About this audiobook

Walter Scott's *Tales of My Landlord* is a foundational sequence of historical novels comprising *The Black Dwarf* and *Old Mortality* in the first series, followed by *The Heart of Mid-Lothian*, *The Bride of Lammermoor*, and *A Legend of Montrose*. Framed through the fictive editor Jedediah Cleishbotham and his innkeeper "landlord," the collection blends oral storytelling, antiquarian reconstruction, comic interruption, romance, and political history. Its Scotland is not a picturesque backdrop but a contested society shaped by religious conflict, dynastic allegiance, class division, and the afterlife of civil war. Scott's characteristic movement between vernacular speech and elevated historical narration gives the novels both documentary authority and imaginative vitality, establishing the historical novel as a major modern literary form. Scott (1771–1832), Scottish novelist, poet, antiquary, and advocate, drew deeply upon national memory, ballad tradition, legal knowledge, and archival research. His fascination with the Jacobite risings, the Covenanters, the Union, and the transformation of Highland and Lowland society reflects both personal patriotism and a sophisticated awareness of historical change. Writing amid the Romantic revival of interest in folklore and the past, he used fiction to mediate between competing political memories rather than simply celebrate one faction. This collection is indispensable for readers interested in Romanticism, Scottish cultural history, narrative theory, and the origins of historical fiction. It rewards sustained reading through its rich characterization, regional voices, and morally complex treatment of political violence, while remaining vividly entertaining. Readers should approach *Tales of My Landlord* not merely as period romance, but as an ambitious inquiry into how communities remember, revise, and live with their past.
