About this audiobook

In Six Major Prophets, Edwin E. Slosson examines six influential modern thinkers whose writings challenged inherited religious, moral, and social orthodoxies. Rather than treating prophecy as supernatural prediction, Slosson understands it as the capacity to diagnose the present and imagine possible futures. His study therefore occupies the productive borderland between literary criticism, intellectual history, and popular philosophy, interpreting each prophet's characteristic language, ethical vision, and social consequences. Written in a lucid, journalistic style but informed by serious comparative analysis, the book reflects the early twentieth century's fascination with cultural upheaval, secularization, and the remaking of civilization. Its portraits are less conventional biographies than intellectual profiles, designed to clarify how literature and public thought can become instruments of reform. Edwin E. Slosson was a journalist, editor, and science writer whose career joined scholarly inquiry to an unusually accessible prose style. His work for the Independent and later for Science News cultivated a talent for explaining complex ideas to a broad readership. Living amid the technological acceleration, political instability, and ideological conflict of the Progressive Era, Slosson was especially attentive to thinkers who could articulate the hopes and anxieties of modernity. Those circumstances help explain his interest in "prophets" as cultural interpreters rather than merely religious figures. Readers interested in modern intellectual history, the relationship between literature and social change, or the origins of twentieth-century secular thought will find Six Major Prophets rewarding. It offers a concise yet penetrating introduction to major currents of modern criticism, while preserving the immediacy of an author convinced that ideas matter because they shape collective futures. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience. - Hand‐picked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance.
