About this audiobook
Ships in the Bay! revisits the extraordinary French landing at Fishguard in 1797, shaping a near-farcical episode of invasion into a tense, humane historical novel. Broster's narrative moves between sea-coast alarm, domestic unease, and military improvisation, combining crisp incident with a fine ear for period speech and social gradation. Written within the interwar flowering of British historical fiction, it avoids mere pageantry: its romance is sharpened by irony, local color, and an acute sense of how rumor turns communities into battlefields. D. K. Broster (1877–1950), an Oxford-educated historian and Red Cross worker in the First World War, brought to fiction both documentary discipline and sympathy for people caught in political upheaval. Best known for her Jacobite novels, she repeatedly explored defeated causes, exiles, and divided allegiances. The Fishguard episode, with its blend of absurdity, courage, and national anxiety, was ideally suited to her historical imagination. Readers who value historical fiction grounded in research yet alive to character will find this novel richly rewarding. It is especially recommended to admirers of coastal settings, Napoleonic-era tensions, and narratives that reveal large history through the fears and resourcefulness of ordinary people.
