The salem witch trials remain one of the most disturbing episodes in early american history—a period when fear, suspicion, religious tension, and accusations of witchcraft devastated communities in colonial massachusetts.
Beginning in 1692, the crisis took hold after several young girls in salem village experienced unusual fits and behavior. When they accused local women of practicing witchcraft, suspicion quickly spread. Neighbors turned against neighbors, accusations multiplied, and authorities established legal proceedings to identify and punish those believed to be involved with supernatural forces.
More than 200 people were accused during the broader crisis. Thirty were found guilty, and 19 people were executed by hanging. Giles corey died after being pressed with heavy stones while refusing to enter a plea, while others died in jail. Contrary to a common misconception, the convicted salem victims were not burned at the stake.
This guide explores how religious beliefs, community disputes, social pressures, questionable evidence, and fear contributed to the trials. It examines the experiences of the accused, the courtroom proceedings, the use of controversial “spectral evidence,” and the eventual collapse of public confidence in the prosecutions.
