William Charles Scully is one of South Africa's best-known authors, although little known outside South Africa. In addition to his work as an author, his paid work was principally as a magistrate in Springfontein, South Africa, as well as in Namaqualand and the Transkei.
First published in 1913, "Reminiscences of a South African Pioneer" is a brilliant account of his life in that country. An autobiographical book beginning with his childhood in Ireland and his immigration to Cape Town when he was around eleven years old. The author writes about big-game hunting, the town natives, and his subsequent travels around South Africa, as well as being one of the first ones to take advantage of the discovery of gold and diamonds in the country.
