About this audiobook
Plain Tales from the Hills gathers more than forty compact fictions drawn from the social, administrative, and domestic worlds of British India. Written with Kipling's characteristic economy, irony, and sharp observational detail, these stories move between cantonments, hill stations, offices, bungalows, and clubs, revealing the tensions beneath imperial routine. Their style combines journalistic precision with dramatic compression, placing them within the late Victorian short-story tradition while also marking a formative moment in Anglo-Indian literature. Rudyard Kipling, born in Bombay in 1865 and educated in England, returned to India as a young journalist, an experience that profoundly shaped his fiction. His work for newspapers in Lahore and Allahabad trained his eye for dialogue, class codes, bureaucratic habits, and the uneasy intimacy between rulers and ruled. Plain Tales from the Hills reflects both his early professional discipline and his complicated proximity to empire. This collection is recommended for readers interested in colonial history, Victorian fiction, and the evolution of the modern short story. Though Kipling's imperial assumptions require critical attention, the book remains valuable for its narrative brilliance, social acuity, and vivid record of a vanished yet consequential world.
