About this audiobook

PEREGRINA is a sweeping historical romance inspired by the true love story of Alma Reed, an American journalist, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the Governor of Yucatán. Set against the breathtaking landscapes of early twentieth-century Mexico, this cinematic novel follows two souls whose love defied politics, distance, and fate. From the white streets of Mérida and the harbor of Progreso to the elegance of San Francisco, their journey unfolds through unforgettable moments of passion, hope, sacrifice, and loss. Blending meticulous historical research with immersive storytelling, PEREGRINA transforms one of Yucatán’s most enduring legends into an emotionally powerful novel where every chapter reads like a scene from a film. More than a historical novel, PEREGRINA is a timeless story about love, memory, and the enduring power of the human heart. Some stories end. Others become legends.

PROLOGUE
There are stories that are born to be told.
And there are others…
That seem to choose, for themselves, the person destined to give them a voice once again.
Since childhood, I have known the name Peregrina.
Show all chapters
Like generations of people from Yucatán, I grew up listening to that melody during serenades, family gatherings, and warm evenings when music seemed capable of stopping time itself. For many years, I believed it was simply one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Until I discovered that behind every verse lived two real people.
A man.
A woman.
A love.
And a story that time could never erase.
As a writer of historical fiction, I understood from the very beginning that my responsibility was never to rewrite history.
It was to respect it.
For that reason, this novel was born only after an extensive journey of research. Books, historical records, newspapers from the period, photographs, and the remarkable work of historians became the foundation upon which this story was built, allowing me to recreate, with the greatest respect possible, the world that surrounded Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Alma Reed.
Yet…
PEREGRINA is not a biography.
Nor is it a history book.
It is a novel.
A story where documented events provide the backbone, while imagination gently fills the silences that no archive could ever preserve.
The conversations.
The emotions.
The glances.
The fears.
The hopes.
Those fragile moments that official history rarely records.
My intention has never been to tell readers what they should think about the people within these pages.
My wish has been far simpler.
To invite you to walk through the streets of Mérida.
To hear the quiet rhythm of the harbor in Progreso.
To breathe the fragrance of bougainvillea after the rain.
To travel the white roads of Yucatán.
And above all…
To remember that before becoming historical figures, Felipe and Alma were simply two human beings who fell in love.
More than a century has passed since then.
Governments have changed.
Cities have grown.
Generations have come and gone.
Yet the song continues to be sung.
And perhaps that is the true miracle of this story.
Because as long as someone is willing to listen to Peregrina…
Their love will always find its way home.
This novel is my humble tribute to that memory.
With respect.
With admiration.
And with the sincere hope that, when you close this book, the next time you hear that beautiful melody…
You will no longer hear only a song.
You will hear the story of two souls who proved that time may take many things away…
But it can never take away a love that chose to become a legend.
