Out of the Silence (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. An Australian Lost-Civilization Scientific Romance of Ancient Technology, Awakening Power, and Apocalyptic AdventureBy Erle Cox
Length12h 15m
About this audiobook
Out of the Silence is a landmark of early Australian science fiction, a "scientific romance" in the tradition of H. G. Wells yet distinctively shaped by Antipodean landscapes and anxieties. Its plot begins with rural discovery: Alan Dundas uncovers the preserved remains and technologies of a vastly ancient civilization, including the formidable Earani, whose awakening threatens to reorder modern humanity. Cox combines adventure, speculative archaeology, romance, and apocalyptic imagination in a prose style at once melodramatic and intellectually ambitious, reflecting early twentieth-century fascinations with evolution, empire, racial theory, and technological supremacy. Erle Cox (1873–1950) was an Australian journalist, editor, and fiction writer whose career in newspapers sharpened his narrative pacing and public engagement with contemporary debates. Living through an era marked by world war, scientific acceleration, and Australia's search for cultural identity, Cox transformed popular serial fiction into a vehicle for grand speculation. His professional proximity to public discourse likely informed the novel's mixture of wonder, caution, and ideological unease. Readers interested in the genealogy of science fiction should regard Out of the Silence as essential. Though bearing the assumptions of its age, it remains compelling for its audacity, mythic scale, and importance in imagining Australian modernity through speculative form.
