About this audiobook
"On the City Wall" is one of Rudyard Kipling's most intricate Indian tales, set in Lahore amid the charged social world of bazaars, rooftops, colonial officials, courtesans, and political rumor. Centered on Lalun, a cultivated courtesan whose house becomes a meeting point for competing loyalties, the story blends espionage, romance, and imperial anxiety. Its compressed, allusive style reflects Kipling's Anglo-Indian realism, while its framing of native politics and British surveillance places it firmly within late Victorian colonial literature. Kipling, born in Bombay in 1865 and later a journalist in British India, drew deeply on the languages, settings, and social tensions he observed in Lahore and elsewhere. His early fiction often emerged from newspaper experience: sharply detailed, attentive to class and bureaucracy, and fascinated by the fragile machinery of empire. "On the City Wall" reveals both his intimate knowledge of Indian urban life and the limitations of his imperial perspective. This story is recommended to readers interested in colonial fiction, political intrigue, and the literary construction of British India. It rewards careful reading, not only for its atmosphere and narrative craft, but also for the questions it raises about power, gender, loyalty, and historical representation.
